Am I the only one in shock at the prices. The pair of BOSS Mustangs that went for 500k+ just floored me. My wife and I sat there stunned.
She's always wanted a BOSS 302 and I've always wanted a BOSS 429. Black at that!
I can't even begin to think "someday..." now.

I walked on a Boss 302 at 14K when I lived in Houston back in 96. Silly me.
I see it as entertainment, not much more. I think the price problem is NOT with the true hobbyist. The people buying these cars are not stupid and didn't get their pockets full of money by being stupid - they know what the cars are worth and the market for these top end cars says (right now anyway) that they are worth that. One of the Boss 429 cars came from a guy over on the feford.com list - it was the real deal, with the proper equipment. The money was pretty right for that car (like $550K). The real people in the hobby know that pricing doesn't carry down to "normal" cars like us Joe Workerbee's can buy. There are still affordable cars. But you are right - if you were pining for a Boss, you may be looking at the Lotto for help from now on.
I can't explain clone cars, except that somebody wants it, has the bucks and really doesn't care about it being real.
The problem I see is that people on the edge of the hobby, or "light weight" car people see this stuff on TV and get to thinking their junk is suddenly worth big bucks. There's a 99.9% chance that no one will buy their overpriced car, but you never know. And even if the car never sells for that price, some don't get the hint. You just go in armed with good info and if you can't negotiate a proper price, you walk.
Sorta example - Open chamber 351C 4V heads are pretty common still and don't really stand as rare performance pieces. Yet you can see some on eBay right now for $650 and up. They are worth about $50~100 a head, tops. Will they sell at that price? Not to somebody that knows 351Cs. But it only takes one buyer that thinks they might be worth that to make the seller look smart and me look like an idiot.
The only solution I see is to buy barn cars from people that don't have cable.

This RIGHT HERE is what I mean - the seller says "I'm a Mustang fanatic" and the car is crap. Mr. Fanatic can't tell the difference between a 351W and a 351C. $25K for 450 HP? Allrighty then. $4K for the blower and $21K for chrome. B-J ready - that's right, you go boy. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3ASS%3AUS%3A1&viewitem=&item=290076024006

Well, that was fast. The listing claimed the engine was a 351W and was original. The VIN shows an "S" - 390. Apparently, someone emailed the seller because the listing got changed in the last hours or so, noting that the motor is a 351C and not original. Still not worth anywhere near $50K, without the data plate info - I'd be thinking it wasn't even a Mach, just a striper car.

I agree that the people with money aren't stupid. They did what they did to make that money. I think eBay and B-J have caused some kind of epidemic in all markets. Some get caught up in "I Won!!!" disease and forget what they're actually buying. Until it's too late.
It's the double-edged sword of cable and the internet. We can get all the information we want, but it doesn't stop some from making silly purchases.
That's not necessarily the fault of the seller, if you can get somebody to pay $50k for inline-six Ford, congratulations to you. We'd love to know you're secret!

I find that the older I get, the less life seems to make sense, but there are some people who think that just because a car is old, it is worth a ton of money. I've actually met some guys who say they have a genuine Boss 302 etc, but the car is so obviously a fake, came across one - a ’69 that had a 351 Windsor in it and quarter scoops on the rear fenders - gee, that must be a real rare Boss - the one of one ’69 351. I find the ads in the local traders pretty hilarious sometimes - one of the favorite descriptive terms is rare - that's right, it's rare, not because the car is desirable, but because nobody in their right mind would have ordered the car that way in the first place, or it's an anniversary edition. Like - selling a 1989 25th anniversary Mustang - say what? The car may have been built in the Mustang's 25th year but when was the last time you saw a 25th anniversary edition 1989 Mustang from the factory?
Anyway, getting back to the Boss cars - I'd absolutely love to have a 302 some day, don't think I'll ever be able to afford a 429 - but at least I got my fix by making it out to the Mid America Ford Meet in Tulsa for the Boss Nationals this year - that was a real treat - it truly was like the invasion of the Boss Mustangs. and great to see so many of them on the Thursday night cruise. If I do ever get the chance to buy a Boss, and for the sake of argument 'lose' money of it, I won't be in the least bit disappointed - I'll be jumping for joy because of the fact that I had a Boss Mustang with my name on the title.
