Hello, I'm new to the site & need help. I'm going to look at a 1964 1/2 Mustang. The owner says it all original The VIN is 5F07U215978 I decoded the Vin# but I don't know were to check on the engine block to make sure it is the original engine that came with the car (matching #'s) Can someone please help me out. Is there anything else I should look for, he said it is an all original car with the original 170 six. The Vin confirms the 170 six, but where is it stamped on the block? Thanks for your help. Dennis

Probably not stamped on the block anywhere. Ford tended to no do that. That "numbers matching" thing is a GM deal. Ford did it on some of the HP type cars and Mustangs in the very late 60's, early 70's. The 170 motor is the same as the Falcon engine, they likely just yanked them off the line into the Mustangs. IIRC, there are several details to ID a 64 1/4, things like a generator instead of an alternator, etc. Searching the web should turn up an ID page.
