There are many possible reasons. The rear quarter panel may have been replaced and welded in wrong, your rear axle could be off-center due to worn spring bushings or a broken locating pin. The frame rails/body could be twisted from previous accident damage too...
You may even have a slightly different offset wheel or a wider drum brake on that side of the car (someone replacing with junkyard parts and pushing the wheel out)...
It's hard to determine via computer, but you're going to have to get under the car and look at everything and take measurements to see if the car is square and the axle is centered. If you don't know how to do this I suggest a competent body shop with a frame table look at it.
Good luck...

No problem...
And don't be so down on yourself for doing your own work. You should be commended for trying. I'm sure you'll get it straightened out soon.
Good luck with it!

I can tell you from experience that the rear ends in these cars do not sit centered, I don't care what you do. I have custom housings in both the Mustang and the Falcon and both are offset a little - the Falcon to the driver's side and the Mustang to the passenger side.
Air shocks are a crutch - don't use them. Drive the car hard for a few minutes, then pull the tire off and you'll see where it's hitting. A couple of pops with a dead blow hammer might be all it needs. If it needs more, you can pie cut the inner fender lip and roll it back against the sheet metal - that will gain about 1/2~3/4" and won't hurt a thing.
