just installed a dual exhaust 2.5in set up(turbo mufflers)on my 74 LTD. its at 10'BTC now. whats a good to enhance all around, advance or retard some degree's. it feels stronger now, it kinda bogs when cold or cool is this normal now. seeking any tune sugestions. 2K miles on accel 576 plugs,D1AE heads, accel super coil, new cap & rotor. carb dialed in at about 12:1. now the exhaust work is complete. P.S it's my daily driver... Bowing deeply

Open chamber heads like 12+ initial, maybe 38~42 total in by around 3000. Depends - the 400 typically has such massive deck clearance that you have to walk the line between performance and detonation. Open chamber heads are really, really "slow" - our race 2V engine has 18 initial, 38 total in by 2500.
If the carb is a stocker, not sure what you can do about cold driveability - probably not much. sounds like you need a hair more pump shot, maybe a step more jet but you can't just go buy those parts for a Ford carb. If you want better tunability in the carb department, consider the Edelbrock carbs. A 1406 600 CFM is a very good street carb and you can buy plenty of turning parts for it. It also comes with very good tuning instructions.

Hey thanks to all who have read my question so far.. thanks falcon67 for the tip. I will set it at 12 dg -thats factory-and see what happens.. the carb is a holley 2v stocker, i notice that the choke has a mind of its own some days.. it takes the mixture and idle adjustments to seriously. when i swaped the heads i saw that room in the bores. maybe i will get lucky on an aussie set soon. a intake and edelbrock 4v can be next LuV that vid of your falcon on the 1/8 mi... You can find lots of parts for that 400 here: http://www.tmeyerinc.com/ Beware the Aussie heads without the proper pistons and deck clearance - the motor will hammer itsself to death. TMeyer can supply pistons that match the small chamber and fix the deck clearance problem. A tight quench distance helps octane tolerance tremendously.

I went to the link and learned a few things. later if I were to completly rebuild the engine. I wuold score some of those pistons to help compression. comp cams techs advised of a R/V grind 252 or 260 grind for lots of torque. there was a "high torque engines" build up on hot rod mag (sept 98)and chose a 400M. with basic block work, alot of decking, some porting(2V heads)and a comps cam extreme energy 268 with cam at 9.5:1, they pulled 375hp and 450ft lbs. I still have a copy of that article and meditate on that day to try something like that. and to think I almost bought a set of ausie heads at the swap meet(pomona) last year... Thank you for you're coments.. Bowing deeply

Good news! If it's pinging a bit at part throttle, some Ford distributors have an adjustable vacuum advance canister. If not, they are available aftermarket. You can take out a few degrees of vacuum advance to help. You can also try a colder plug - the normal plug is an Autolite 25, Walmart carries 24s on the shelf and those are one step colder.

well this will close this post. My LTD is in "meditation". this has been done before. I fired up last april(parked since oct/04)for an emergency use, and after 8,000 miles, it's gonna go back to quiet mode. I got a 351W/AOD on stand by for it. and will share in detail the work involved, need time and more to finish... stay tuned? thanking all, Ven. Hui Yu L.A,Ca
