Hello all, I have recently been lucky enough to have come into some money and want to use it to buy my dream car, a mustang, but which one? I was thinking a 1966 convertable, but please could you all let me know what 60's mustang you think to be the best. I am not after a shelby or fast back but a convertable. thankyou for your help and i look forward to hearing your advice. Adi

Well, that argument could go on forever. Your choice - any of them are nice. If you like the 66, get one. If it turns out later you like some other model better, sell it and get something else. It's not like you have to pick one and then be stuck with it forever. Any well maintained Mustang -especially a convertible- in good or restored condition will hold it's value better than a new car and should return your money (or a large portion) at resale.
I personally prefer the 69/70 models and also like the lines of a 72. But that's just me. We had a 2002 for a while - it was a very nice driver. 67-70 models are a slightly bigger car and can benefit from lessons learned in the Boss/Trans Am program to upgrade handling and braking. But those upgrades can be applied to any car in the line up, from 65 to 73.
Parts availability seems to be best for the 65-68 models, a bit less for 69/70 and less again for 71 up.

IMHO, if you want the oppitome of classic Mustang convertible styling it HAS to be a '65-'66. The '67-'68 cars, while bigger and more muscular looking, look better (to ME) as a coupe or fastback. The '69-'70 is best served in the SportsRoof body style, and the '71-73s in SportsRoof or convertible.
I'm not trying to offend any owners here, it's just my opinion, but you could have a nicely optioned '66 GT convertible in the 20K range and if you want it modernized with EFI, overdrive trans, disc brakes, etc. expect to be in the low 30s for a very nicely done car.
Where are you located? Some of your money could be eaten in shipping/export fees, taxes, etc. as well.

If it's a convertible you're after, then probably go for a 1965 -66 or 1967, which although brawnier, still looks good as a ragtop. Personally I think you can't go wrong with any one of these, though buy the best car you can. It sounds to me like you're based in the UK, if that is the case, you might want to think about a restomod car with disc brakes, 302 EFI engine and four-speed automatic or five-speed manual upgrades, to help with fuel economy, considering the price of gas over there. Also, you need to factor in shipping the car and also customs and excise duty and other taxes once the car arrives in the UK. Also, if the car was originally registered for road use after 1st September 1965, you'll need to convert the rear turn signals (indicators) to amber, to comply with UK regs. Some owners don't do this, in order to keep their cars original, but a lot of UK drivers aren't familiar with red rear indicators and you risk a ticket. Also, you should probably try and contact the Mustang Owner's Club of Great Britain, they're a good bunch and can help you with all kinds of stuff once your car is in the UK - good luck in your search.

I have personally never liked the looks of a convertable. The roofline is a major part of the look of the car. That being said, I had a friend years ago who had a 72 convertable, metallic blue with white interior, white chin spoiler, white rear spoiler (aka Mach I). IMO the best looking mustang ever made, coming from a guy who don't like convertables. Just my 2 cents!
