How can I check ports between the intake manifold and head? My 67 fastback is just a street driver - not raced. How critical is it to match the ports? My engine is topped with an Edlebrock manifold and ported heads. Is it possible that the porting opened the ports to where they don't match?

For a street driver, I wouldn't worry about it. Depends on what "ported" means - most porting involves work around the valve and bowl and not so much on the runner. If the head opening is slightly bigger than the intake, it's not a problem. There are a few ways to scope it out - scribe the port centerlines on the intake, then bolt it down with used gaskets and transfer the scribes to the head. With the intake on, scribe the top of the intake ports on the head and then use careful measurements to see how things line up. You can also sometimes use a fairly thick piece of soft cardboard in place of gaskets to get an impression. You can also do some checking on a dual plane using a powerful light and a small mirror. The older you get, the less your eyes allow that kind of stand-on-your-head-squint-in-the-dark-hole deal LOL.

Years ago I had a motorcycle where the ports didn't match and it hesitated upon acceleration. I've had this problem on my 'Stang and wondered if the hesitation was related to a port matching problem. Thanks for the help. I'll have to try using your suggestions. 65wagonmaste

Hesitation is a carb issue with possibly a timing adjustment required. Port mis-match won't cause that.
