I just bought a 1970 Mustang Fastback project. After looking around a little I discovered that someone has removed the VIN plate from the dash so I moved to the door tag. I found that the driver's door has been changed. The driver door is from a 69 so the data on the tag does not help me identify my car. I started looking on the web for other VIN locations & found a lot of info about fender apron stampings. What i read said that there could be a partial or full VIN stamped on top of the apron on both sides of the car. There is no numbers on the passenger side but is a short series of numbers on the driver's side apron. But, these letters & numbers do not match anything i can find about 1970 VINs. The numbers I found on the driver's apron are (GA 36870). This same series of numbers is also stamped on the body inside the driver's door jam, just between the upper & lower hinges. Then, right nest to the door jam stamping there is a small, oval shaped, aluminum plate with the same numbers stamped into it, GA 36870. They must be a partial VIN but I can find no reference to any of these in any of the info I have read. The Body Buck Tag is in place on the passenger side fender apron, very near the cowl. All the info I can find says there sould be a VIN on that tag but there is not. It is very strange. I joined this forum with the hopes that some of you very knowledgealbe Mustang folks can help me figure this car out. thanks, JD

JD, I used to have a 70 Mach1 years ago that I restored and the buck tag is located at the driver side next to hood hinge (see photo). Sometimes this tag do get smashed between the fender and the apron causing part of the VIN # to be unreadable. I'm only going to speculate that a "G" letter in the VIN number represents an engine code Boss 302.
