Mustang II versus Mercury Capri

I've had this going around my head for a while and wanted to see what you guys think. If you came across a Mustang II and a 1971-77 Mercury Capri which would you buy? I'm leaning to the Capri. These are now super rare. One of the my teachers had a Capri when I was a kid, V-6, manual, really nice car.

I'd pick the Mustang II. Had two in the past, wished I'd kept one. Solid cars. Of course, if I had one now it would probably end up with a 351C in it... Never cared much for the Capri.

I can definitely see the appeal of some Mustang IIs, if I was going to pick one of those I would probably go with a Cobra II or King Cobra, drop in a fuellie 302 and convert it to a five-speed, never really cared much for the notchbacks.
It's a shame we didn't get the generation 3 version of the European Capri (1978-87), the 3.0 Litre S (that was how they spell it) and the later 2.8 V6 Injection were awesome cars, light, fast and decent handlers for their day.

I would go with the Mustang II, but I'm saying that cause I have a 78 Mustang II with a 302 4-speed and its a hatch. I love the car so far but the bad thing about them is there hook up they are very light in the back. But besides that I would choose that.

Dave, I don't see how you can drive like that from the passenger seat LOL. Love that car. When I hit the lotto, I'm putting the Falcon in a crate, ship it over and we're going to go best 3 out of 5.

I have to agree with 250 Mav. A good Mustang II is nice, but a German built Capri, is well different. Throw in a 3.0-liter Essex V6 with 140 horsepower and three two barrel carbs (you could get this engine in Europe), along with a four-speed and leaf sprung axle and it's sideways around every corner. These kids into Japanese Imports have no idea what they're missing out on.
Maybe we could settle this with a shootout. If anybody in the US or Canada has a Capri V6 and a Mustang II V8 with similar power outputs, four-speeds and mods, maybe it's time to silence the critics. The Capri is quite a bit lighter than a Mustang II so I think a V6 against V8 would be cool, maybe we'll even run it in the mag. I remember years and years ago when Popular and Performance Car review had their Buick GS versus Hemi in response to a letter sent in by a reader with a Hemi. If I remember rightly the Hemi actually lost that one.

Before you consider an old Capri find out what it takes to align the front end. Not good
