Has anyone ever seen a car with powder coated chrome bumpers, door handles, and mirrors? I know powder coat chrome is more silver than bright chrome, but I can't help but think it would look ok on a 67 fairlane painted the new ford gunmetal grey metallic. Any thoughts? Also, how would powder coating the chrome on the windows and tailight rings look? I want something different.

I don't know, I think it depends on the individual. Personally I'm a big fan of chrome on older cars, I think when you've got new or freshly re-plated chrome trim, it looks awesome and makes the car stand out. I'm not so keen when people paint bumpers and grilles on older cars, either body color or dull aluminum (unless they originally came that way) and I think that with gunmetal gray, powder coated chrome wouldn't really stand out, but again it's all down to personal preference. I haven't yet seen powder coating on the exterior of an older Ford, but know a guy who had the ground effects on his 1991 Mustang GT (originally titanium) powder coated. I actually thought they looked better before. Having said, the powder coating under the hood and on suspension components looks awesome - I've seen powder coated intakes and valve covers and they look fantastic. Still, it doesn't hurt to try something different. If you can find a piece of old, scrap chrome trim and try powder coating it and then hold it up to a car or another piece of scrap metal or plastic painted gunmetal gray that would at least give you an idea before you decide to jump in and paint the whole car.

I tend to agree with you. The chrome on the older cars was just sexy. I am just testing the waters to see if any one else had done something like this. I'll probably just go chrome.

I was on a road trip recently, and I saw a 57 Chevy that was a dark grey metallic with the chrome powder coated trim and bumpers. Powder coated chrome looks silver. Man it was sexy. The contrast was awesome. It made me seriously re-think going back chrome. It looked better than I would have ever guessed. Has anyone else seen a vehicle like this?

There's various types of powder used so you can get a near chrome look, or you can go with something more silver like. A lot of it is personal taste.

I for one like painted bumpers trim on classic cars WHEN the cars are setup like a G-machine/pro-touring type look. If the car is mostly stock appearing, then yes, chrome is much more desirable to me in that instance. It's a matter of taste, color, looks, and it all has to work...

Remember, it's your car, do what you want and that will make YOU happy and to hell with everyone else. I'm so sick of forums tearing someones car apart because it doesn't fit THEIR taste...
