Hi!
My Dad has a restored 1967 fairlane 500 vert with a 289 in it, and we havetried several times to fit headers on the car. The first time was using some tri-y's that did not clear the automatic transmission shift linkage. (Its a colum-shifted c4.)
Now, we have bought some hooker 6901hkr headers, which say they are made for the a/t. However, the tubes are bent in such a way that one hits the firewall and another pins the kickdown linkage against the firewall. The rear bolt is close to 1/4" off from the hole position.
After calling hooker, they reccomended just bending the headers with a 2x4 for leverage. However, the tubes are routed in such a way that there wouldn't be anywhere to bend them(or so it seems).
Here are some attached pictures. There is plastic protecting the header for fitment, and they aren't fully in position, however, they should give you an idea of what i am talking about.

What can i do to remedy this issue?
Thanks!
Neill

I own an old set (bought in like 1995) of Hooker 6901s. They fit my 67 Falcon (same as your Fairlane) perfectly. My first thought would be that they are made wrong. As far as I know, Hooker has outsourced all production to Mexico. Not saying that automatically makes for bad parts, but I "hear" rumblings that Hooker parts are not of the quality they might have been in the past. An option (what I did on my Tubular swap headers) would be to take them to a good muffler shop and have maybe an 1" taken out of that tube and the tube layed back to clear the firewall. If you are not coating the headers, you'll need 1/2" or better clearance and maybe a heat shield to keep the carpet from burning.
For the kickdown, look at possibly replacing the stock kickdown with a carb bracket and cable from Lokar. Most of the stock kickwdowns are Rube Goldberg contraptions. The Lokar parts give you a lot more flexibility to route away from the headers, it's easy to adjust and looks good too. Not exactly cheap, but an effective part. I have used the setup on the race cars.

Just curious, what did you end up doing to correct the problem. I will installing a set of headers on my 67 fairlane at resto-time. I plan on starting in late summer. Thanks

Any body else have headers on a 67 fairlane w/small block? If so, what breed are they. Any help would be appreciated.
