I just wanted to say "Thank You" to Falcon67 especially and to everyone else in general. My project with my 1970 Cougar is pretty much complete and my 351 Cleveland is running extremely well. I have learned alot (and relearned and relearned) and I appreciate the advice and comments from everyone. Relying on the experience of others helped to boost my confidence and helped me gain some valuable experience and insight to parts interchangability and quality. For me that was important as there was no book to fall back on to answer the constant and never ending stream of questions that I had!
Lessons Learned:
PROCOMP Distributors are bad, bad, bad!!! Don't buy them!
PDF Files (FAQ's) from Holley & Edelbrock are very helpful in adapting your carburetor or intake to your specific engine combination.
Measure twice and cut once (I am a shipfitter and I SHOULD know this). MSD superconductor ignition wires (anyone need a shorter, spare set?
Research what you need. No speed shops up here, SUMMIT handled all my needs, but it sucks waiting!
Yes! You can use the valley pan & end seal gaskets with an Edlebrock intake.
351-C rotates CCW, turning the distributor CW does NOT advance the timing!
Stock ignition hot wire to coil is only 6-9 volts DC (because of the inline resistor). Aftermarket coils and distributors like 12 volts DC, make sure you run from a switched source.
I am sure I learned more than that...it is all that I remember!
Thanks again it is much appreciated!!
Falcon67 YOU are the man! And, I don't even know your name.

Thanks for the update and glad to be of some assistance. I Googled your boats, those were some fine ships you served on.

Nope. I am not leaving the site. I just completed the project that I was working on and for the most part it is finished (fine tuning is all that is left). It was just a long and aggravating ordeal, but a lot of people online helped me work through problems and mental roadblocks so that I could complete what I started and to correct the problems I ran into (PROCOMP distributor).
Pics to follow!

The above photos are with the Pertronix billet distributor and new air cleaner.

This photo is with my original choice of air cleaner and the PROCOMP distributor. The difference in height between the two distributors dictated the need for a new air cleaner and new sparkplug wires.

That's a good looking engine you wound up with. You work at a fine yard as well,I spent time there in 1982 during a retrofit on a Perry Class Frigate.Do you know if the blue BIW flag from the top of the crane was ever replaced?I'm sure it was but it sure made for some interesting looks from the pier as we pulled out.

LBESNER,
Thanks for the compliment....it is much appreciated!
Bath Iron Works. You wouldn't recognize it now. It is very much changed. I wasn't here in 1982, just out poking holes in the ocean on an old boomer.
No flags are on the cranes, but some of the same landmark cranes are here. We have changed hands a few times but are now owned by General Dynamics.
