Classicman, if the cylinder heads on your 289 2V motor still the original and it doesn't have hardened valve seats installed then I recommend using leaded gas if driven daily. But it is hard to find leaded fuel and most people use unleaded fuel and add lead additive. If hardened valve seats were installed then use unleaded gas.

It won't have hardened seats. But - it's not a problem. Run whatever fuel grade is necessary to prevent pinging and it'll be just fine. Valve seat recession is possible - over an extended period of time. EXTENDED being the key word. If the heads ever get redone, a proper seat cut will lessen the chance of seat recession without having to install hardened seats.

I built up a 73 351W motor for my 80 Ford Van, and I put about 75,000 miles on it before the valves beat up in the heads. So what you need to ask yourself, 1. Is this going to be acruise car, with very little miles being put on it? If so, the Lead additives will alllow you to not bother the motor. 2. Does the motor need to be rebuilt? If so, a set of E7TE heads for stock would be a choice, Iheard they were good heads, unless someone has abetter suggestion, I'd sure like to hear!!! I'm talking budget build, now, but around here, in Athens, OHIO, To do a complete Hardened seat set and valves is 400 - 500 dollars. You would have to check in your area for prices. Please check with a local Ford Car Club, you could get some good advice, and a good set of heads for a little of nothing, and someone might even help with the swap!!! Some of us can't get enough of playing around with old cars!!!!
