1967 Ford Mustang Fastback w/ Vinyl Top
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My buddy is hauling a 1967 Mustang fastback out of the woods up here in Maine. The car has a vinyl top, the vinyl top trim and is a genuine fastback. It also has a 390 with a 4 speed.
Has anyone ever heard of a vinyl topped Mustang fastback? It is queer looking to say the least. The car has been out back there for more than 20 years.
Anyone have pics or factual data?
Thanks,
Steve

What? No input? What's up with that?
Where are the experts and Mustang buffs?
Magazine editors and technical personnel.....your voices are notably absent.
Hmmmm?
This is a Mustang Forum and a Mustang Magazine is it not?
Dealer installed item? Misguided customization from the 70's? Let's hear it!!!!!
Thanks,
Steve

Gentlemen
My guess is yes, either a dealer installed option or somebody's idea of good taste in the early to mid 1970s. There were and still are quite a few companies that will install a vinyl or landau roof on just about any car - just look at all those Grand Marquis and Sables down in Florida with aftermarket carriage roofs. My guess is that this fastback probably had the vinyl top installed by the selling dealership - from my records, I can't find any note of factory vinyl for fastbacks, however, that doesn't mean it wasn't possible - some very weird and wonderful combinations have showed up over the years.
Do you have any pictures of the vinyl top? How did it work with the C-pillar vents - to me it sounds that having to deal with the vents would make the installation t tricky? If the car is still driveable I'd be tempted to leave the vinyl on there for now, install risers on the rear springs and big and little tires with late 1960s/ 1970s slot mags and take it to a few shows - just for kicks, before embarking on a restoration - let's face it - how many correctly restored 1967 fastbacks are out there already?

Steve, come on man, cut us some slack...
It was one day and you posted a second time about not getting a response.
First off, here in Tampa we had Tropical Storm Fay to deal with. We closed everything up Monday and we were told to stay home Tuesday in case things got bad. Lucky for us a false alarm (though the other side of the state is drowning in rain sorry to say). Plus, this is what we call "ship week" where we have a three day window to ship the finished magazine off to the printer (in this case the Nov issue). Like I said before, I try to get on here when I can (and my 200 plus posts should show that) but my number one priority is to publishing and printing our magazine. If I'm on here 24/7 answering questions, posting blogs, and writing web stories the print book would never go out to the readers. Now who would be more ticked off? I know in this age of instant download gratification it's easy to get miffed when you don't get an instant answer, but we do try. Understand that...
Thanks... Mark

Hi Mark,
Consider slack given and lucky you with extra days off!
Instant gratification aside and no criticism intended (although it appears some was taken!) I am not "miffed" or "ticked off". I am just looking for an answer to my question.....some information on the subject. Can you help or not?

86CobraGT,
Thanks for the reply.
Someone mentioned this car: 1967 Stallion Mustang

Although this is most definitely not it. The vinyl top is on top of the roof above the window line.....and if I remember correctly it terminates at the top of the rear window. So it is different than the Stallion.
Thanks,
Steve

No problem Steve. You know we help when we can, I just wanted you to know it wasn't getting ignored...
No day off either, I wrote Oval Office and Your Turn for December while working from home Tuesday... ![]()
I remember the Mavericks having a partial vinyl top similar to what you speak of...

Not sure if Ford ever offered anything factory. At least I've never seen anything in ANY literature I've seen...
It may very well be a dealer customization deal, just like the faux convertible tops you see nowadays on Lincolns and Cadillacs...
I'll try to dig into the archives tomorrow at work. Nov is gone to the printer so it should be a relatively "light" day tomorrow... (who am I kidding!)

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the reply, it is much appreciated!
The halo vinyl roof looks very similar to what is on this fastback. I'll have to see if my friend there can e-mail the pictures to me off of his phone.
God, that is an ugly top!
Thanks,
Steve

Good to see that Mustangspecs.com at least gives some credit to their source of information when copying the Stallion info from my site... www.ponysite.de (on the page of www.freenet-homepage.de/pony/stallion.htm)
Anyway I have somewhere pics of at least 3 Vynil roof 67s that have popped up overseas. They were all done in a different way, so there would be little evidence that they were done from the factory. Will try to find the pics in the past decades folders. More later.

I have seen a red one with a white vinyl roof a long time ago. I was just flipping through the channels on t.v. and saw the movie Car Wash with George Carlin. I believe the car I just mentioned was in it. I googled it to find out if it was the same 1 and came across your question. Good luck from a fellow New Englander. ---Mike

Wythors:
Sorry about the disappearance of the pics. I will have to see if they are still on the verizon album page. If they are I will repost them.
Hi Mike,
Where you from in the great North East? I love the movie "Car Wash"; and yes it dates me and my bad taste in music! I also saw a vinyl top car that was similar in one of the later "Dirty Harry" movies....but a 4 door. Yuck!
