I just purchased a 1965 Thunderbird. Since I am begginig the restoration I want to get more out of the engine. I am told the 390fe came with 300hp stock. Is there any way to get the hp into the 400plus range, with out major block work. I am trying to create a beast from what is called a sleeper. Is there a way to get it into the 500hp range. With out nitrous. I am new to motor builds-rebuilds, and will welcome any and all advice.
Thanks!! Chris

The 390 is part of the FE family and requires some specialized knowledge. I would try to get an inventory of of the parts like head casting numbers and then search (or join and post) at fordfe.com. The FE experts are all there. I would say without serious upgrades 500HP is wishing a bit.

I'd start with a Scat(4.250) stroker crank, all forged internals, H beam rods, flat top pistons, roller long duration cam and a set of Edelbrock heads that have CNC'ed chambers. Then I would have someone who really knows what they are doing assemble it all ,,top it with a big victor manifold and a King Demon carb and you are probably in that area,,,,how much money ya got?
