My C4, behind my 289, slips from 2nd to 3rd. it will shift into 3rd after I let off the throttle. Once it is in 3rd there are no slipping issues. I was told that it is my direct drive clutch and it has to be dissassembled for the repair. I'm not crazy about building a trans before I restore the car. Any ideas? Thanks.
P.S. I believe it is a stock trans. Seems to be worse when warm.

have the trans rebuilt... its not hard to *** they do wear out... i have one that went 150K when i tore it down... and i could still read the ink printing on the clutch faces...

pick up a valve body shift kit...  there are several levels of upgrades in there.. but they have the replacement springs for the ones that break in the valve body... oh yea.. you don't have to drop the trans to do the valve body...  drain the fluid , drop the pan... undo only the bolts with 7/16 heads... including some behind the filter...

you do have to properly realign the kick down lever into its narrow slot when reinstalling the valve body...

its not that hard to *** but follow instructions... and only do one valve section at a time...   lots of cheep brake cleaner spray... will do the cleaning as you get each valve out...

there are also variants in C4s....   66 to 69, 70, and 71 up... there are also differences in shift levers on the side of the transmission... different lengths and angles...  so know what ya got before ordering parts...  and most transmission parts places will have most of the stuff in stock... shift kits and overhaul kits..  complete bushing kits..  stock rebuilt torque converters,  new torque converter nuts... try not to break the brass ells that come out the side to hook up to the cooling lines.. some of them are getting hard to find...

Before you throw many parts at it, make sure the modulator is working and check the line from the modulator to the intake or carb.  It should have manifold vacuum and not be leaking.  A failing modulator or broken vacuum line can cause symptoms similar to what you describe.  It's not a "slip" - it's not shifting.  If it was "slipping", you'd more likely have engine overspeed on the 2-3 shift, but it would typically still shift.

If you'd like to rebuild a C4, get a good service manual (Haynes has one that's decent and I don't care for Haynes manuals) or on the web, see the "Monster C4 Thread" over at fordmuscle.com
