Ive been tryin to decide on a motor for my 89 GT for about 2 years now. The guy in a machine shop up here sais im wastin my time and money buildin a 347 stroker outta the stock block. Anyone have any suggestions on what to go? Im tryin to budget it but work my way to the 500hp~ mark or so. Is this a waste of time and should I buy an updated block? I dont really plan on racin much maybe a few times a year.

I've been running a 450hp 347 using a vintage 302 block (mid '70s, just a bit more metal than the late-model 5.0 block) for six years and 80K miles with no issues, and I drive it hard too...

The stock block can take 500hp, but it needs to be tuned right and I suggest billet main caps, studs, and a girdle to help it out...

An aftermarket block is a great investment for future rebuilds/strokes, but I understand the cost involved too...

Frankly, if you're not using a power adder and it has a safe tune, I think the stock block will be fine. I've seen lots of guys use them to that power level, both street and race use.

If you think you'll get bored with the power level and add a blower or spray then I would get the better block to start with...

There's nothing wrong with a 347 street/sometime strip build in a stock block.  If you use good parts and a girdle, you should not have a problem.  But - I've seen stockers run for years at 500+HP with no issues and also seen some go 100 rounds and split like a flakey biscuit.  Your deal - if you plan to keep the motor (and maybe the car) for a long time, and plan upgrades (you will, trust me) an aftermarket block will pay for its self in the long term.  $1800 for something like the new Boss 302 block is a stretch but it also give you more options.
