What to do with the Neutral Safety Switch?

Long before I purchased my coupe, someone swapped in a 4 speed for the oringal C4.  After the swap was performed, they let the neutral safety switch hang from the firewall.  Now years later the switch is falling apart.  My question is does anyone know if I can pull the neutral safety switch out along with the switch feeds from under the dash and replace it with the correct back up light harness and switch for a 4 speed?  And more importantly will the car be able to start this way?  Thanks for your time.

There are two pigtails under the dash that come out of the firewall as red and blue two-wire connectors (on the auto). One is for backup lamps, the other is for the neutral switch. The two pigtails work for either manual or auto trans, you just have to purchase the correct switches/harness to make it all work.

For the four-speed backup lamp switch you'll need something like this:

For the neutral start you simply jumper the connector (early cars didn't have a clutch switch or anything to prevent being started in gear). You can either jumper it under the dash (unplug and plug the blue/red wires together), or jumper it at the existing plug on the firewall (buy the mating plug, cut it off your auto neutral switch, or cut the plug off and crimp the wires together). What ever works best for you...

I did this exact swap on 65 fastback. I swapped in a 4-speed in place of the C-4. The only step I had to do extra is put a small hole under the console for the grommet in Mark's picture. Wire it as Mark described and all will work fine.
