I would appreciate some help / suggestions with my 1969 Mustang 351W challenge. I have a rebuilt 351W going into a 1969 Mustang Convertible. The engine is in place and I have also now bolted up the C4 transmission and torque converter. The torque converter is aligned correctly with the flex plate and I have 1 bolt in place already on the converter; however, I cannot turn the engine (using the bolt at the front of the flywheel) to add the remaining 3 bolts on the torque converter! The engine turned fine before the transmission was bolted up but now will not turn at all. I tried shifting the transmission into neutral - still no luck. Any suggestions?

Try turning the output shaft of the trans. while in neutral. if it won't turn there is a problem with the tranny. i wonder if some how it is fluid locked

I just went through this exact problem. Engine will turn over, Tranny will turn over, put them together and they will not turn over.

You have the wrong flex plate. Go back to the engine the Tranny came from and take the correct flex plate. They look almost identical, but they are not exact.

Good point Fantastic, and thanks for posting...

I would also double check the torque converter is fully seated. If not, when you mate the engine and trans together you will jamb the converter into the pump (often damaging the pump) and locking up the trans. NEVER pull the trans case to the engine block with the mounting bolts. You should have both surfaces flush to each other before a single bolt goes in. The torque converter should be spun and wiggled while being slid onto the trans input shaft to ensure it is fully seated...

HTH...

Yeah, mustang man and fantastic are both right. Also even if you used the right flex plate its possible that you got the bolt pattern wrong because it only fits one way, but it will bolt on and look correct but isnt because it bends the flex plate and keeps the engine from turning over. Remember as mustang man said get the convertor fully seated , it drops back at least twice as you turn it, not just once.
