I think that is the only thing that could make the ford small block even better!
-Do they make something for that?

dry sump oil pumps are available for almost any application..  pans are already made...  


if you want to get really creative... you could machine a new front cover and install a crank snout driven oil pump from another motor..    you might even have room for a suction and a pressure stage.. if you get creative with your mill..

putting one pump rotor really close to the timing chain.. and the other outside and close to the balancer......

that way you may not have to change the design of the oil pan..

Why?

For 90% of street driving a wet sump system is fine, and with a quality baffled pan with trap doors, like a Canton, Milodon, Moroso, etc. it is even more of a moot point. Dry sumps are great for the engines/power levels that need it, but for your typical, lets say, 450hp 347 stroker, it isn't needed. Packaging stuff under hood can become a nightmare. Think of a 8 to 10 quart, or more dry sump oil storage tank, all the braided AN lines, the multi stage pump mounted to the engine, the belt drive, etc. it can get pretty tight in a typical engine bay.

Next time you see a Ford GT supercar at a show with the rear clamshell open, stop and take a look at their dry sump setup, and that's a factory engineered solution. You could drop a BB in that engine compartment and it would most likely never make it to the asphalt the engine bay is packed so tight! LOL

IIRC, Buicks and Mopars have external pumps - and they suck in performance applications.  Much modification required.  So no - the pumps supplied on the 5.0 are just fine as is, thanks.  As noted, if you really have a need to wind'em up, get a dry sump.

Well, I get what yyour saying- but from a maintenance standpoint- Like the independently gasketed timing cover and fixed rocker assembly, The external oil pump would be a sense of security for traveling and easy replacement. I had to leave a Mint Cutlass on the side of the road in NC on I95 many years back. I was traveling through from NY to FLA and had no means to deal with it. An under 30,000mi GM product that sat for a few years and gave out that far into the trip.
It's all about being self sufficient, and capable. ( I havent seen a lightweight, mini emergency engine hoist that goes in the trunk yet!)
On another note, I would be very tempted to fit a 390fe into my 88GrandMarquis!
