I'm sure this has been adressed before, but I don't know where to look for info. Would like to swap a mustang rear end into a 88 T-Bird . Don't know for sure about what would be best ratio for gears, [this is a 3.8, with auto overdrive, kinda want to stick with good mileage] and which is better ...posi...disc or drum....just want a quick swap.....

I guess I need to explain a little better... I read an article on changing from a 4 lug system to a 5 lug. My 2nd home [the junk yard] had the front end parts, but we haven't started on the project yet. So my question should have been has anyone put a 5 lug rear end in an older T-Bird.....

just curious....   are you doing this just to swap wheels...   or are you putting more power under the hood..

later 8.8 rear ends have larger axles... instead of the 28 spline axles.. i seem to recall they have 31 spline axles..93 and up

but those years of T birds had IRS...   i also don't know if the ranger and explorers went to the larger axles with the 5 bolt pattern...

perhaps somebody deeper into fords would know...

you might also want to compare the larger axle mustang rear housings... to see if they are the same width as your tbirds..

sorry to ask more questions than you did... but  i bet that someone may be able to help...  i will dig into the axle catalogs..  but i don't have housing information at my finger tips...

and... does your Tbird already have rear disc brakes... or are you planning on installing them...

Thanx for reply, and really thanks for the articles... as time becomes available, I can research and see what has been done. More power may be coming via the 3.8, or maybe a 289. The little brother [new owner of car] has an old 289 hi-po that might be used. We was looking for a nice easy swap, with not a whole bunch of mods to make it work.
