I bought my son a 1971 fastback it has a 302 in it and I want to put a 5.0 out of a 2000 mercury mariner in it. I was wondering if anyone has made a swap like this, and if it is a big customizing job thanks

It's the same basic motor. If you bring over the fuel injection, you'll have to modify the car harness as necessary to accommodate the computer and sensors. There are plenty of cars with a similar swap, several articles in the Tech section here.

Thanks for the reply, the motor is fuel injected. I have a friend that worked at a shop that has a computer that will print out the wiring diagram, and Xtreme horsepower in Dallas Texas is gonna put a chip in my computer and reprogram it to do away with the stuff I dont need.

You will also need a front sump pan and corresponding oil pump pickup. Also a fuel return line and might need a crossover for your radiator hose since the pump exits on a different side although later 302's like yours may have already had that.

Not only a fuel return line, but also need to contemplate the difference in fuel tanks and fuel pressure/in tank pump.....
