Hello everyone!
I am attempting to put a 1984 AOD into my 1966 full size Ford.I have the required 164 tooth 14.23 inch flywheel am about to order the throttle valve cable kit.
I am going for gas mileage not horsepower, the stock 66 289 has enough horsepower and in stock form gave me just under 24 mpg (highway) with the 2 speed tranny and 280 gear rear end.So I hope the AOD and a 350 gear rear end will give me added mileage.
Has anyone tried this setup and if so any input would be appreciated.Such as torque convertor etc.

Thanks

i personally think its going to be hard to get much better than 24 MPG..

there are a BUNCH of AOD articles spread out in the many magazines on this site...

you will want to read at least the first 40 articles... some apply to the AOD.. but article at 40 seems to be almost exactly what you are doing...

Your reply is very much appreciated, thanks for your kindness!!!
I have had four 289s through the years and each one gave me around 22-24 mpg.Even my 1964 Galaxie drop top gave me 24 highway. My thought considering the gearing on the aod versus the old two speed should give me all around better mpg at least in combined mileage city/highway.I will have to look into the final (4th) gear ratio to see if I can better highway mpg.I think with the proper rear end gear and the aod I can better the 24 mpg.
Again ...thank you very much for taking the time to reply!
