400 or 351 modified there ok they can be built to be torgue monsters but they are know for weak bottom ends and rear main seal leaks i would suggest and up grade for a lil extra money and more avail parts is a 460 and they use the same bell housing so the trans will bolt up  my best friend bought a 79 150 4x4 with 6" lift and 38" tires had a 351m in it rebuilt went thru 2 rear mains in a year and a half and it only got 11 mpg  my 88 f-350 crewcab with 460 gets that witha trailer behined it hope this helps  sam

.. Did you ever get around to the 400 engine in this truck?

.. Nowadays the 173netHP Ford 400" can be easily and cheaply (under $1,000 DIY) built to make over 400+ HP and 450+ lb.-ft. torque and the cam & piston swap and boost in compression ratio also increases the MPG... and it's 50 - 100 pounds lighter than a 460 engine... for a truck... for more money get 550+ HP & 540+ torque... for a car... the bottom end/oiling problem is a cheap fix also... same formulas work for the 351"M/400block engine, just add the 400 crank to make it a 400"....
