I have a 1990 5.0 LX convertible that has a slip in the tranny.  I am thinking about just switching the tranny instead of rebuilding.  Question is, "what transmissions will bolt up to what I have and what vehicles can I find them in?

do  a    transmission  service first..

new transmission fluid... 4 to 6 quarts...

new transmission filter and pan gasket...

the transmission is a hydraulic device...   the pump has to PULL fluid up thru the filter.. if the filter is blocked or dirty.. there is not enough fluid flow to build enough pressure to clamp the clutches and steels tight to prevent slippage...

be sure to read the sediment in the bottom of the transmission pan...   black fuzzy is clutch linings and some is expected.....   steel is bad... aluminum is bad... tiny particles of brass are kinda expected...
