Ammeters typically don't move move much at all.  The shunt that is used to create the current flow characteristics,  is formed in the wiring between the alternator output and starter relay connections.  You can verfiy the meter has continuity. Other than this, prior to replacement, you can make sure you have clean and tight wiring connections . jlg

JJ,
There is a large black-yellow wire from you alt to your starter relay. Internally within the harness, there is a yellow wire that is a soldered connection that forms the shunt along with a red wire that hooks up to the relay. You can split the wire harness tape and look for the connection or you can buy an new engine compt/alternator harness.jlg
