Hi and hope someone can really help me out.  I took in my 2001 mustang gt to have the plugs replaced.  Well ever since then the #2 cylinder has been making a ticking noise and it never done this before only started after the plugs were replaced.  I have taken it to 3 different machinacins and they are all telling me something different.  One said i should have the top of the engine flushed because it might be carbon build up, another one said the #2 cylinder is not getting compression and just stuff like that.  I had someone recheck the plugs and ect and cost me 100.00 for that after it cost me 160.00 to have the spark plugs done.  Now i notice a light blueish smoke coming out of my tail pipes.  That ticking noise which sounds like something hitting metal and when u give it some gas as it is sitting sounds like an old time sewing machine.  I dont know that much about cars but can't keep putting money into it when no one will give me an idea what can be wrong.  What i dont understand as i had no problems with it until the plugs were changed and it has 101,003 miles on the motor.  do any of you know what might be wrong< helpless here Confused

Most ticking noises on the 4.6L 2V are from worn timing chain guides/tensioners and/or valve lash caps. Because you're hearing it right around cylinder #2 it could very well be a lash cap in the valvetrain.

A small-time tune-up shop is not where you want to go for further diagnosis on this. You'll just be waisting money. Either take it to the dealer (at least for a pro diagnosis, you can always do the work elsewhere) or take it to a competent Mustang shop in your area that specializes in modular engines.

If you tell us where you're located we might be able to make a recommendation of Mustang shop as well.

Hi and not sure what a lash cap is, and i live in Cayce SC.  It just seems strange that nothing like this happened until the plugs were changed and the smoke didnt start until the other mechanic  put in a additive to help stop the tapping noise. I cant or dont have the money to keep going back but yet one mechanic offer to trade a car for mine, which seem funny since he told me it needs a complete valve job done on it

well took it in and had a complete diagnostic done and found out something is in the head side and chewed up cylinder #2 and by me putting in the new plugs it just made the problem come to a head.  So in order to fix it it will cost about 3000.00 so they said its best to get a new engine put in as mine as over 100,000 and would be cheaper in the long run.  So now have to find an engine some where in columbia SC thanks for your help here

I know the newer 3-valve engines had issues with plug breakage, but I'm wondering if your spark plug changer broke a plug in #2 and left behind some parts. Using a boroscope or inspection camera down the #2 plug hole might allow you to see what it is.

As for a replacement engine check out MPS Auto Salvage in Georgia (www.mpsautosalvage.com). They often have good used engines for $1,200-$1,800 depending upon mileage, year, etc. You could even save on shipping and drive down and pick it up with a pal that has a pickup truck.

BTW, a lash cap is the small metal cap that adjusts the lash (fit/space) between the roller follower and the camshaft. It is a valvetrain part.
