I just inherited a 1966 mustang and noticed the number one plug wire is not in the number one position on the distributor cap. The number 5 wire is in that position with the number one wire to the right. The wires follow the correct firing sequence and the car runs. Why would this have been done?

its not a problem, someone simply installed the dist in the wrong clocking position. very common.

Has no effect on timing, it just means when someone installed the distributor they got it off a tooth or two which just positions the rotor at a different position and was corrected buy simply repositioning the wires. They then adjusted the distributor and timed it normally. No problem.

you can drop the distributor in , in any of about 20 positions, one for every tooth on the distributor gear, and as long as the motor is set to top dead center of number one cylinder on compression, you then take what ever distributor tower the rotor is pointing to, that will be #1 cylinder, then using the firing order from #1 add the rest of the wires in the direction of the distributor rotation.

Scratch off the 1 so you cant see it. Like they said, the sequence can start anywhere, counter clock-wise(FORD) as long as the starting cylinder is TDC, compression stroke.
